Adding Google Ads or Other HTML snippets to your WordPress Sidebar

To advertise your affiliates banners or Google ads in your WordPress sidebar is very simple.  First, you will login to your WordPress administration area, then click Appearance in the left side menu.  Next, your going to click on Widgets.  Once you've done that, you simply drag a new TEXT widget to your side bar, click the arrow located on the top right of the widget box, then copy and paste the HTML or Javascript snippet from your advertiser into that box. You don't have to give it a title, but you can if you'd like. Click save to make your changes.

Note: for this to work, you must have a sidebar.php file located in your themes root folder, which most usually do.

Viola, you now have advertising on your sidebar.

How NOT to sell your Affiliates products or services

Well I know many people are always searching on Google, Yahoo, and many others for ways to make money with Affiliate programs like CJ (commission Junction), Amazon, and Link Share. Well, your not going to find that here unfortunately, instead your going to get the complete opposite. I am going to show you just a few small things that you really SHOULDN'T do. Your either going to owe more money then you made, or barely make any money at all.

1. The almighty Google Adsense.

You've probably seen them, they are all over the internet, the "How to make money using Google Adsense" sites. These sites, although some are very informative, always seem to leave out one simple fact - you need lots of money to make money. The problem with this method is that it's been done a thousand times over. You are literally competing with thousands of other people utilizing the same method;  trying to get the top position and trying to get the most frequently used keywords on Google.

For you to even get started with this method, you are looking at spending a fortune. First most of these people are all bidding on the same keywords and phrases, so for you to even have a SMALL chance that your affiliate ad will show up with one of these keywords on the first two or three pages of Google, expect to pay about $5-$10 per click, maybe even a little more.  This can add up very fast.  I mean in one day you could wrap up a bill for over $200-$300 bucks, and maybe if your lucky you see a small return, or break even with your commissions. Some people are doing very well with this method,  but i'm sure it's a very small percentage.

The same can go for Facebook, and Yahoo as well.  These two are a little different, but your still paying more, for more visibility. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

2. Cluttering your website with Banners.

This is a big no-no. I personally hate going to websites where I am literally searching for content because the banners and Google ads are way to overwhelming and are taking away my focus from what I was actually looking for.  At this point I'd probably hit the back button and find a a site with less clutter and better information.   I like clean sites, sites with maybe one or two banners, maybe located at the top or bottom of the page; maybe one on the side too, that's fine.

3. Banners that don't really relate to the website I am looking at .

I see this alot, sites with banners that have no relation to the content I am looking at. For example, I would be on a website about cars, and they would be displaying a banner about make-up. Not the best combo. If your going to promote information about cars, then you should be posting banners about car parts, or car accessories.  It just makes sense.   I doubt someone on your site reading an article, say about the latest truck accessories, wants to buy make-up.  I'm sure after reading your article he/she might want to find an online store selling truck accessories, so having a banner that relates to that,  just might do the trick, and you may even make some money from that.   Just food for thought.
